RESOURCES

The following sites have some great vintage photographs without watermarks
https://www.pexels.com/search/vintage/

But to be honest the easiest thing is to Google:

antique photographs public domain
to come up with this sort of image:

Then add different decades

1950s antique photographs public domain

When using FOUND images – as this is called – it can add impact to your workj and to your reflection to use the work of established, professional photographers from the early to mid-twentieth century such as:

Aaron Siskind:

PAPER

Whether you create traditional or digital collage you will need to print these out. You will see that a lot of the collage work above is printed on vintage paper.

Please DO NOT use that revolting printed scrapbook paper you can buy from the Range and other dens of iniquity. Go to charity or second hand shops and buy:

Old Art books (really old one that have coloured prints attached to thick backing paper (tear off the print and you can print on the backing paper).

Old Maps

Old newspapers and magazines

Old envelopes. If you leave brown envelopes in bright sunlight for a week or so they age nicely.

TIPS

Don’t stick 3D objects to collage. If you want to add keys, jewellery, drawing equipment etc an excellent effect can be created by photocopying or scanning with the lid off.
